Arsenal Delanne 10







The Arsenal - Delanne 10-C2 was an unusual-appearing general-purpose French fighter protoype which appeared shortly before the start of the Second World War. Its tandem-wing concept was tested with the Delanne 20 light two-seat aircraft and was originally planned as yet another lightweight fighter, or "Jockey," a concept which the French pursued during the 1930's almost to the point of obsession. It evolved out of this into a two-seat general-purpose or army co-operation aircraft; this was the same role the British Westland Lysander originally fulfilled. The first, and apparently only, prototype was about to begin flight tests when the French were overtaken by the Germans. It was eventually flown late in 1941, and was later taken to Germany for continued tests. Little information is available about the results of these tests or the final disposition of this unusual aircraft.

The construction of this aircraft was as much to prove a point, as it was to develop a state of the art two-seat fighter. The Arsenal-Delanne 10-C2 was a tandem-monoplane in its configuration, also known as a NÚnadovich biplane. This configuration gave the aircraft a very wide CG range and an extremely low stalling speed due to the continuous slot-effect of the two wings.
Work on the aircraft began in 1939 after proving flights had been conducted on a test version known as the Arsenal-Delanne 20. Construction was of metal stressed-skin. It had retractable main wheels with an unusual feature for the time, the gear doors closed after the wheels had extended. This is rather commonplace now.

The pilot sat behind a 132 Imperial Gallon fuel tank and a rear-facing gunner with exceptional view, sat behind him.

Power was provided by an 860 hp Hispano-Suiza 12-cylinder liquid-cooled engine. It had a top speed of 550 km/h and a 90-minute endurance.

The Arsenal-Delanne 10-C2 prototype had just been completed when the Germans over-ran the factory in June 1940. Forced work on the aircraft continued under the supervision of the Germans.
